Mghongo Eco-Leadership Centre
Overview
The Mghongo Eco-Leadership Centre is a transformative educational facility located in Wongonyi Village, designed to address the community’s most pressing needs through sustainable, locally-driven solutions. The Centre’s mission is to provide high-quality education and training that empowers individuals with practical skills, environmental stewardship, and entrepreneurial knowledge, helping them build sustainable livelihoods.
What We Do
The Centre offers a variety of programs aimed at improving the standard of living for the local community:
Demonstration Farm: Our farm provides hands-on training for farmers in sustainable agriculture, teaching them modern farming techniques while preserving traditional methods. Farmers learn about crop rotation, soil management, organic farming, and water conservation.
Eco-Lodge (Upcoming): Plans are underway to build an eco-lodge designed using local materials and environmentally sustainable practices. This lodge will serve as an income generator for the village while also hosting students and volunteers from around the world.
Cultural Centre & Library: The planned addition of a cultural centre and library will create a space for local youth and adults to access resources on Kenyan heritage and modern technology. The library will also include a Computer Hub where locals can access the internet and develop essential digital skills.
Training Programs
The Mghongo Eco-Leadership Centre offers a range of workshops to community members:
- Agricultural Workshops: Farmers are trained in best practices for growing high-yield crops, managing pests, and utilizing eco-friendly farming techniques.
- Soap Making and Basket Weaving: Empowering women with marketable skills like soap production and advanced basket weaving, helping them create goods for sale in local and regional markets.
- Biosand Water Filters: Training community members in building low-cost, eco-friendly water filters to provide clean drinking water for their families.
Free Health Services: Our medical camps offer free check-ups, diagnostics, and treatment for various conditions. These camps are particularly beneficial to those who are unable to access regular healthcare services due to distance, cost, or other barriers.
Specialist Support: Volunteer medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and health practitioners, have joined us during these camps, providing specialized care such as eye exams, dental check-ups, and maternal health services.
